Editorial Policy & Calculation Methodology

Utilities Center is a reference site: visitors come here to get a correct answer fast. This page explains how we build and maintain our 74 tools and their accompanying guides, the formulas and sources behind our calculations, how content is reviewed and dated, and what we do when we get something wrong. It exists so you can judge the reliability of what you read here.

Editorial standards

Every tool and guide on Utilities Center is written and maintained by our own team. We apply the same standards across the site:

• One job per tool. Each utility solves a single, clearly defined task so it stays fast, predictable, and easy to verify.
• Original, purpose-written content. Descriptions, instructions, examples, and FAQs are written by our team specifically for the tool they accompany — not scraped or spun from other sites.
• Plain language. We write for a general audience. Technical terms are explained the first time they appear.
• Show the working. Where a tool produces a calculated result, the guide shows the formula and a worked example so you can reproduce the answer by hand.
• No paywalls, no accounts. Every tool is free and runs in your browser; nothing is gated behind a sign-up.

Calculation methodology

Our calculators and converters use well-established, publicly documented formulas. We do not invent proprietary math. Where a standard formula exists, we use it and cite it in the guide. The principles below apply to every calculated result on the site.

General approach

• Standard formulas only. Each calculator documents the exact formula it applies, in plain text, on its guide page.
• Worked examples. Every calculator guide includes at least one example with real input numbers and the expected output, so you can confirm the tool matches the stated formula.
• Unit consistency. Converters use fixed, internationally agreed conversion factors (SI and common imperial units) and display the factor where it matters.
• Rounding disclosed. Results are rounded to a sensible precision for display; the guide notes the rounding where it could affect a decision.
• Local processing. All calculations run in your browser. We do not send your inputs to a server to compute them.

Specific formulas we use

• Percentage of a number: result = (percentage ÷ 100) × value.
• Percentage change: change = ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100.
• Discount / sale price: discount amount = original × (discount ÷ 100); final = original − discount amount.
• Tax (inclusive & exclusive): tax-exclusive adds tax to the net price; tax-inclusive extracts it with tax = total − (total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)).
• Tip & split bill: tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100); per person = (bill + tip) ÷ party size.
• Loan EMI: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1), where P is principal, r is the monthly rate, and n is the number of monthly payments.
• Mortgage / amortization: same EMI formula, with an amortization schedule showing the interest/principal split per payment.
• Compound interest: A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)^{n × t}, where r is the annual rate, n the compounding periods per year, and t the years.
• BMI: metric BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)²; imperial BMI = 703 × weight(lb) ÷ height(in)².
• BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor): men = 10×kg + 6.25×cm − 5×age + 5; women = 10×kg + 6.25×cm − 5×age − 161. TDEE = BMR × activity factor.
• Body fat (U.S. Navy method): circumference-based estimates using neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements.
• Standard deviation: population σ = √(Σ(x − μ)² ÷ N); sample s = √(Σ(x − x̄)² ÷ (N − 1)).
• Unit & data converters: fixed SI / binary conversion factors (e.g. 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 MiB = 2²⁰ bytes).

Health & finance disclaimer

Our health and fitness calculators (BMI, BMR, body fat, water intake, pregnancy due date) and finance calculators (loan, mortgage, compound interest, tax) are provided for general information only. They use standard formulas, but they cannot account for your individual circumstances, medical history, tax jurisdiction, or loan terms. They are not medical or financial advice. For decisions that matter to your health or money, confirm the result with a qualified professional.

Sourcing & references

• Word lists. The Word Unscrambler and Anagram Solver use a dictionary of more than 370,000 English words (the open-source dwyl/english-words list). Results are every valid dictionary word that can be formed from your letters.
• Conversion factors. Unit, data, pressure, energy, and power converters use internationally recognized SI and standard factors.
• Formulas. Calculation formulas are drawn from established, widely taught sources (standard arithmetic, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, Naegele's rule, the U.S. Navy body-fat method, standard EMI and compound-interest formulas).
• No user data as source. We never use data entered into a tool as content or training material. Inputs are processed in your browser and not stored.

Review & update process

Content is reviewed before it is published and re-reviewed on a regular schedule or when the underlying standard changes. Each guide page shows a visible “Updated” date driven by real content edits, and our Article structured data carries a dateModified field for search engines.

• Pre-publish review. A second team member checks the formula, the worked example, and the instructions against an independent source before a tool or guide goes live.
• Periodic re-review. Calculators and guides are re-checked on a rolling basis; the “Updated” date on each guide reflects the last such review or content edit.
• Event-driven updates. When a standard, formula, or conversion factor changes, we update the affected tool and bump its date in the same change.

If we learn that a tool, formula, example, or guide is incorrect, we fix it promptly and update the “Updated” date on the affected page. Significant corrections are noted in the page content where they materially change a prior result. If you spot an error, please tell us via the Contact page or support@utilities.center — we review every report and prioritize fixes to calculated results.

Advertising & editorial independence

Utilities Center is funded by advertising, but ads do not shape our editorial content. The formulas, examples, and guides are determined solely by accuracy and clarity. Advertisers cannot pay to change a result, alter a guide, or receive favorable editorial treatment. Ads are served by third-party networks and are visually separated from tool results and editorial content.

Accessibility & device support

• Every tool is designed to work on desktop and mobile browsers without installation.
• Pages include skip-to-content links, semantic headings, and breadcrumb navigation.
• We aim for readable contrast and touch targets sized for mobile use.
