How QR Codes Work and How to Generate Them
Understand what QR codes encode, how error correction lets them scan when damaged, and best practices for use.
A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that encodes text — usually a URL — as a pattern of squares. A QR code generator turns a link or string into a scannable, downloadable code.
What a QR code encodes
A QR code stores arbitrary text: a URL, contact details (vCard), Wi-Fi credentials, plain text, or even a short SMS. Phone cameras decode the pattern and act on the content — opening a link, joining a network, or adding a contact.
Error correction levels
QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction so they still scan when partly damaged or obscured. There are four levels: L (7% recovery), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%). Higher correction means more redundancy and a larger code, but better resilience — useful for printed codes that may get scuffed.
How to generate a QR code
- Enter the URL or text to encode.
- Choose a size and, if supported, colours and error-correction level.
- Generate and download the image (PNG or SVG).
- Test it with a phone before printing in bulk.
Examples
A restaurant menu URL encoded as a QR code lets diners scan to view the menu on their phones. A vCard QR code on a business card adds the contact with one scan. A Wi-Fi QR code lets guests join the network without typing a password.
When a QR code generator is useful
- Linking printed materials (posters, flyers, packaging) to a web page.
- Sharing Wi-Fi access with guests.
- Digital business cards and contact sharing.
- Contactless menus, payments, or check-in.
