About the fuel economy converter

The fuel economy converter translates between the common ways of expressing fuel consumption. Some countries measure distance per volume — miles per gallon (US or UK) and kilometers per liter — while others measure volume per distance, such as liters per 100km. The converter handles both conventions and the inversion between them automatically.

All values are normalized to kilometers per liter, then converted to your target unit. Standard factors are used: 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, and 1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L. Note that a higher MPG or km/L means better economy, while a lower L/100km means better economy.

Why is the conversion between MPG and L/100km not a simple ratio?
MPG and km/L measure distance per volume, while L/100km measures volume per distance — they are reciprocals. The converter inverts the value automatically, so you do not have to.
What is the difference between US and UK MPG?
A US gallon is 3.785 liters and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 liters, so the same fuel efficiency gives a larger MPG number in the UK. The converter keeps them separate.
Is a higher or lower L/100km better?
