About the image compressor

Large images slow down web pages and bloat emails and storage. This compressor re-encodes your image using the browser’s built-in canvas API, letting you trade a little quality for a much smaller file — entirely on your device, so your image is never uploaded anywhere.

JPEG and WebP use the quality slider (lower = smaller file, more compression artefacts). PNG is lossless, so the slider is ignored and the file is simply re-encoded. A white background is applied when exporting to JPEG because JPEG does not support transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All compression happens in your browser using the canvas API. Your file never leaves your device.
Why does PNG not change with the slider?
PNG is a lossless format, so there is no quality setting to adjust. The tool re-encodes it, which can still reduce size by optimising metadata.
What quality should I use?
0.7–0.8 is a good balance for photos. Below 0.5 you will usually see visible artefacts. For screenshots with text, keep quality high or use PNG.
Is the compressor free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up or limits.
