About the tax calculator

The tax calculator handles both common tax scenarios. In Add tax mode, you start with a pre-tax (net) amount and a tax rate, and the tool adds the tax to show the final total. In Remove tax mode, you start with a tax-inclusive total and the tool works backwards to find the net amount and the tax portion.

Use it for sales tax, VAT, GST, and any percentage-based tax. Common rates include 20% VAT in the UK, 19% in Germany, 5% GST in India, and varying US sales tax by state. Results update instantly as you type.

The formulas

  • Add tax: Tax = Net × (Rate ÷ 100); Total = Net + Tax
  • Remove tax: Net = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100); Tax = Total − Net

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive?
Tax-exclusive (add tax) means the price does not yet include tax, so tax is added on top. Tax-inclusive (remove tax) means the price already includes tax, so the tax is extracted from the total.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2 to get the net amount; the difference is the VAT.
Can I use this for GST?
Yes. GST works the same way as any percentage-based tax — enter the GST rate and the amount.
Does the calculator store my data?
No. All calculations happen in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Is the tax calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free and requires no account or sign-up.
