About the text to list

The text to list formatter takes a block of text and breaks it into individual items using the delimiter you choose — new lines, commas, semicolons, spaces, tabs or any custom string. It then cleans and reshapes the items and joins them back with your preferred separator, ready to paste into a spreadsheet, document or code.

It is handy for converting a comma-separated list into a vertical list, turning a paragraph into a numbered outline, removing duplicates from a list of tags, or sorting a jumbled set of values alphabetically. Every option applies live as you type.

  • Join with — new line, comma, comma + space, semicolon, space, pipe or custom.
  • Clean up — trim whitespace, remove empty items, remove duplicates, sort A→Z.
  • Format — add 1. 2. 3. numbering or wrap each item in quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split on a custom character or word?
Yes. Choose "Custom" as the split delimiter and type any character or string — the text is split at every occurrence of it.
How do I make a numbered list?
Turn on the "Numbered" option and each item is prefixed with 1., 2., 3. and so on, in order.
Will it remove duplicate items?
Only if you enable "Remove duplicates". It keeps the first occurrence of each item and drops later repeats.
Does it keep my original line breaks?
Only if you split by new line and join with new line. Choosing a different separator reformats the output accordingly.
