How to Calculate Exact Age in Years, Months and Days

Understand how age is calculated across calendars, why leap years matter, and how to find total days or weeks lived.

An age calculator finds the exact time between a birth date and a target date, expressed in years, months, and days, plus totals like weeks or days lived. It accounts for calendar quirks so you do not have to.

How age is calculated

The calculator subtracts the birth date from the target date by counting full years first, then full months within the remaining period, then the leftover days. Leap years and varying month lengths are handled by the date library, so the result is exact rather than an approximation.

Why leap years and month lengths matter

A naive "365 days per year, 30 days per month" calculation drifts over time. Someone born on 29 February ages on 1 March in non-leap years in many legal systems; months range from 28 to 31 days. A proper calculator uses real calendar dates to avoid these errors.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the birth date.
  2. Optionally change the target date (defaults to today).
  3. Read the age in years, months, and days, plus total weeks or days.

Examples

A birth date of 15 March 1990 measured on 15 March 2024 gives exactly 34 years, 0 months, 0 days — and roughly 12,419 total days. Measured a week later it reads 34 years, 0 months, 7 days.

When an age calculator is useful

  • Confirming eligibility for age-restricted services or benefits.
  • Filling forms that require exact age.
  • Calculating age for pets, vehicles, or memberships.
  • Counting days between any two life events.
