How to Calculate a Tip and Split the Bill

A tip calculator works out the gratuity on a bill, the total including tip, and how much each person owes when the bill is split. It removes the awkward maths at the end of a group meal.

The tip formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)

Total = Bill + Tip

Per person = Total ÷ People

Tipping etiquette basics

Tipping customs vary by country. In the United States, 15–20% is standard for table service; in much of Europe a service charge is included and a small rounding-up is common; in Japan tipping is not customary. When in doubt, check local norms before travelling.

Examples

A $80 bill with an 18% tip split among 4 people: tip = $14.40, total = $94.40, per person = $23.60. Rounding the per-person share to $24 leaves a small extra tip — a common and polite practice.
